Plimoth Plantation Holds Event to Spotlight

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Program

Plimoth Plantation will hold an event to mark the successful implementation of an electric vehicle charging program that the museum and 5 other Plymouth area locations installed earlier this year. The event will be held on Friday, September 18th, 2015 at 2pm in the museum's main parking lot adjacent to the charging stations. State and Town government officials will participate in the event to share remarks about the environmental and economic benefits of the program. There will be demonstrations showing how vehicles use the charging stations.  Cider and donuts will be served. The event is open to all.

The charging stations are the result of a grant program developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, known as the Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP). The Town of Plymouth’s Planning Department and the charging unit vendor (ChargePoint), with cooperation from the private business sector, installed the electric fueling infrastructure system throughout the Town of Plymouth.

A single, two port charging station has been installed at Plimoth Plantation in the main parking where visitors can conveniently charge their vehicles, free of charge, while they visit the museum. Plimoth Plantation was selected to participate in the program as an important tourist destination that is establishing an alternative energy infrastructure. Other Plymouth locations in the program include Cordage Park, Colony Place (Sleepy’s), Colony Place (Starbucks), Tracy Motors (off Samoset Street) and Mayflower Plaza in Manomet.

"Plimoth Plantation is delighted to be part of this pilot program," said Ellie Donovan, Executive Director of Plimoth Plantation. “We are committed to making eco-friendly choices whenever possible in our operations, and we know environmental stewardship is important to our visitors as well. We're happy to offer our guests this amenity and hope that the charging stations will encourage electric vehicle drivers to extend their range and visit Plymouth." “As the popularity of electric vehicles grows, the accessibility of electric charging stations in public
places gives communities an economic and environmental advantage,” said Patrick Farah, Plymouth's Energy Officer. “These stations provide drivers an incentive to come into places in our area where they can easily charge up while shopping, sightseeing or dining – and ultimately drive longer distances. We want to encourage electric vehicle drivers to visit America’s Home Town, knowing they will be able to charge their cars while they enjoy their day as well as give employees of these companies an opportunity to seek alternative transportation options.
