Event Report
Everywhere you looked during Electricarpalooza, there were people asking questions about driving electric and experiencing it for themselves through test drives and rides. The annual celebration of National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) on Sep. 28 drew abbout 50 attendees from throughout Central Virginia. In the Midlothian Library, Trip Pollard of the Southern Environmental Law Center kicked things off with an overview of policies to accelerate transportation electrification in Virginia. After the presentation, event attendees had time to connect with representatives from Citizens Climate Lobby, Concerned Citizens of Charles City County, Electrify Virginia, the Sierra Club, and the Virginia League of Conservation Voters. Snacks were provided by Urban Farmhouse-Midlothian and paid for by Blue Ridge Cyclery, which also brought an array of e-bikes for display and rides.
Later in the afternoon, there was a double feature of EV-related films shown on the big screen in the library’s Community Room. The indoor activities concluded with a panel discussion on the past, present and future of electric vehicle advocacy and education. Speakers included Tasha Durrett of the Southern Environmental Law Center, Robin Jones of Virginia Clean Cities, and Jordan Neerhof of the Electrification Coalition. A video of the panel will soon be posted on Facebook and YouTube.
Outside of the library in the parking lot, EVs were available for test drives from Strosnider Chevrolet (see photo below) and Rivian, as well as from a new Volvo XC40 Recharge owner. Other unique cars and trucks were on display in the parking lot and along Coalfield Commons Place, including a Tesla Cybertruck wrapped by ALSET Auto Richmond (who also sponsored the film screenings), an electrified Ford Ranger, and a first-generation Nissan LEAF whose owner came all the way from Fredericksburg. Local dealers brought a Chevy Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning for display.

The day concluded with a reception at Urban Farmhouse to recognize the 10th anniversary of Drive Electric RVA, a chapter of the Electric Vehicle Association. The chapter has grown into a thriving community of EV owners and enthusiasts who stay connected via in-person events, social media, and a mailing list than exceeds 300 people.
