Event Report

The Center for an Ecology-Based Economy's 2022 Solar & EV Expo was a success! The Ford F-150 Lightning was out continuously on test drives, and a second Ford Lightning demonstrated the battery power available by popping popcorn in a microwave on the tailgate. We hosted workshops on a variety of topics, including Katherine Bessey from the Cooperative Development Institute on Cooperative Community Solar; Fred Garbo from Garbo-Kane Integrated Solar Builders on Residential Solar; and CEBE-led workshops on Moving Beyond Individual Car Ownership, DIY low-tech solar, electrifying everything in your life, and answering questions around batteries, recycling, and lithium. Sixteen locally-owned EVs were present for attendees to test ride and drive, as well as the Lightning from Ripley & Fletcher Ford. Electric tools like lawnmowers and chainsaws were on display, and e-Bikes were available for test rides from Pedego Electric Bikes and Rusty Crank Bike Shop. Shred Electric brought a moonbike, an electric fatbike, and a solar generator for viewing.

This event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Maine Climate Action Now, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Garbo-Kane Integrated Solar Builders, ReVision Energy, Maine Conservation Voters, Pine Tree Solar, National Drive Electric Week, Renewal by Andersen, Seacoast E-Bikes, The Nature Conservancy in Maine, Shred Electric.

Event Description

Join us Oct. 1 from 12-4pm at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris for our 8th Annual Solar & EV Expo. This free, outdoor event will include the chance to talk to local solar installers, EV owners, and other clean energy and transport enthusiasts. Test drive, ride, or view EVs owned by local residents, and hear from them what it's really like to drive an EV in western Maine. Get your questions answered about community solar, residential solar, e-bikes, EVs, and more.

In addition to the Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric truck at this year's Expo, we'll also have the following locally-owned vehicles available for test drives or rides: Chevy Bolt EUV, Tesla Model Y, 2013 Nissan Leaf, 2023 Nissan Leaf, 2019 Kia Niro EV, Smart Fortwo, Chevy Bolt, Volkswagen ID4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and more.

Rusty Crank bike shop will be present with E-Bikes to test ride -- please bring your helmet!

Also make plans to drop into our brief, informative workshops throughout the day. The goal is to answer some of the frequently asked questions around solar and EVs. If you don't happen to catch the workshop, watch out for experts with "Ask me about..." stickers on their shirts, and ask them your questions!

As in past years, you'll find helpful information at tables from our sponsors and partners, include The Nature Conservancy in Maine, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Pine Tree Solar, Renewal by Andersen, and a CEBE table packed with info on community solar, Efficiency Maine rebates, and other CEBE programs. Our Power will be collecting signatures for the consumer-owned utility referendum.
