Event Report

Polk County’s third National Drive Electric Week EV-outreach event, ” Lakeland Drive Electric Day,” was a huge success!

This free, family-friendly outdoor event was held on Sat., Sept. 24, 2022 in downtown Lakeland’s beautiful Munn Park, adjacent to the Lakeland Farmers Market.  The event featured local EV owners showcasing their vehicles, answering visitor’s questions, & sharing their EV-enthusiasm. The Lakeland Farmers Market's wonderful weekly fresh produce, delicious food, and crafts booths added to the festivities.

Fifteen electric vehicles (EVs) comprising ten models were on display, including: Ford F150 Lightning pickup, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan LEAF, Tesla 3, Ford Mustang Mach-e, Chevy Bolt & Chevy Bolt EUV, as well as an electric bicycle and scooter.  EV exhibitors included individual owners and Lakeland Electric Utility.  A fascinating example of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging was demonstrated by the Kia EV6 owner who charged his electric scooter.

Visitors enjoyed learning about EVs at our NDEW welcome canopies, which featured EV educational displays, prize drawings, an “EV-IQ” quiz, and children’s EV craft activities. New this year was a children’s “EV Passport” scavenger hunt.  Drawing prizes included a programmable thermostat donated by Lakeland Electric, and a four-class gift certificate donated by Satya Life Yoga Studio of Lakeland.

Lakeland Drive Electric Day was organized with the help of volunteers from the Polk EV Outreach Committee, the League of Women Voters of Polk County and the Ancient Islands Sierra Club’s Clean Energy Committee.  Local event sponsor was Lakeland Electric Utility.

The organizers look forward to hosting our second annual “Drive Electric Earth Day Lakeland” event on Sat. April 22, 2023.
