Event Report

Thanks for celebrating the opening of two new public electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers at the Sea-Tac Airport!

Years in the making, Sea-Tac Airport is now part of a larger network of EV charging along the West Coast Electric Highway which includes new public charging stations in Bellingham, Chehalis, DuPont, and Tacoma. The fast charging equipment allows EV drivers to plug in and charge for about 20 minutes and then hit the open road or sky.

Crowds gathered to participate in the dedication ceremony including electric vehicle drivers, TV stations, project partners and the traveling public.

The cell phone lot was abuzz during the SeaTac NDEW event. There were planes flying overhead, light rail trains gliding by, and a variety of makes and models of plug in electric cars parked on display.

Event Highlights:

Project partners shared remarks about the new charging stations such as:

  • Governor Inslee proclaimed September 14 - 22 as Drive Electric Week in Washington
  • Washington state has met its goal of 50,000 EVs on our roads by 2020!
  • There are five more NDEW events in Washington including a ride and drive at the LeMay America's Car Museum in Tacoma, which is also another charging site funded by this project and part of the West Coast Electric Highway.

Electric Vehicle owners and a dealer showed their vehicles and talked about their driving experience. It was exciting to see the selection of plug-ins on the market including:

  • BMW i3 Rex
  • Chevrolet Bolt
  • Chevrolet Volt
  • Ford Focus Electric
  • Jaguar I-Pace
  • Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive
  • Nissan Leaf
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Tesla Model S
  • Tesla Model X

These new chargers are brought to the public through a unique public-private partnership for highway corridor charging. WSDOT's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Partnerships Program (EVIPP) provided a $595,000 grant to incentivize the investment of charging stations in six communities along I-5 with a total project cost of $1,461,689. This was the 5th of six locations to open for the public and is expected to be one of the busiest.
