Event Report

EVs @ the Market, Davis CA

On Saturday, September 21st, SacEV, the Davis Electric Vehicle Association, the City of Davis and Cool Davis hosted a National Drive Electric Event at the Davis Farmers Market from 9 AM to 1:30 PM, with impressive results.

Several dealerships (Hanlees Chevy, Nissan & Toyota; Shottenkirk Honda Davis, Tesla, Niello Jaguar) brought a total of 6 EVs to the Event for test drives (Jaguar iPace, Toyota Prius Prime, Tesla Model 3, Chevy Bolt, Honda Clarity BEV, and Nissan Leaf 2nd generation).  Dealership staff gave 254 test drives. 40 participants completed pre and post drive surveys to date and another 19 registered and are being followed up with.

SacEV, DEVA and Cool Davis members brought 24 personal EVs to the Event. Guy Hall brought a Tesla Model X for rides only.  There were over 1153 separate conversations with community members, as these EV owners shared their families’ EV experiences.

New vehicles on display included the 2019 Hyundai Kona, Jaguar iPace, and 2015 Zero SR motorcycle. There was a 1950s electric conversion MG TD as well. The CA Clean Vehicle Rebate Program had a very well-attended and popular booth, sharing information about the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Program.

Neighbors at Parkview Place, the first LEED Platinum Net Zero Energy residential building in Davis, welcomed the workshop tent on their driveway. The event featured this special section for Electric assist bikes, hosted by Bike Davis, with a Jump Bike (the bike share program in Davis) and commuter E-bike available for test rides, and other bikes on display.  The commuter E-bike and a cargo E-bike were from local partner Kens Bike & Ski.

Cool Davis’ community partners (Unitrans, Yolo Solano Air Quality District, City of Davis Bike and Pedestrian Programs and Safe Routes to Schools, and Yolo Bus) hosted a transportation fair featuring bus information, bicycle safety checks and information for Safe Routes to school. Sandra Hall brought her 2019 Chevy Bolt to be a canvas for kids to express themselves (with dry erase pens), and there was a mini-Tesla for kids too!

With help from Guy Hall, Chris Granger, and Eugen Dunlap, the event featured several workshops, including “EV 101—What EV is Right For Me?,” “EV/PV Driving on Sunshine!” and “Buying a Used EV”. The workshops were offered twice during the Event.

So many efforts made this possible. Funds from NDEW Electrify America grants helped pay for thank-you rewards of Farmers Market Bucks to the first 100 drivers who took test drives. Davis Community Church provided us with essential space for our exhibits and support of volunteers. Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District  funds from an annual grant were available for some additional basic event expenses. The City of Davis was key to making this event work, allowing us to block off 4th street to show EVs and provide test drives. A locally owned Tesla 3 was displayed with event information next to inside the Farmers Market, in view of thousands of shoppers. A team of amazing volunteers gave approximately 270 hours of time to plan and execute this wonderful event. In addition to this the 6 partner organizations plus the dealers provided staff and volunteers on site for their booths and activities contributed this additional value to the event. The EVs@TheMarket had a total value of approximately $14,157 covering venue, equipment, communications (marketing & ads),  food, supplies, event planning and management, day of event displays and activities. This includes estimated value of in-kind contributions of  $6972 in contributed value of time from volunteers, exhibitors and and in kind value of space/venue donated by partners.
