Event Report

This was a parade. not an EV showcase. About 4,000 people lined the parade route. I'm assuming half of them were actually paying attention so perhaps 2,000 "attended" the event. It was meant to be fun!  Our segment was the "Salem Sustainability Contingent" and included:
  • Me dressed as a heat pump
  • Sustainability, Energy & Resiliency Committee (SERC) members in costume
  • Mack Park Food Farm volunteers carrying pitchforks and shovels
  • At least 5 e-bike riders, 1 e-scooter, and 3 electric unicycles
  • Cars: Ford Mach-E, Chevy Volt, Rivian R1S, a few Teslas (one that spewed bubbles out of "tailpipes)
I presume the Mayor was there at some point, but I did not actually see him. Salem Access Television also filmed the parade which was commentated by Salem Main Streets.

This is the link to the video. The Sustainability Segment is on at 59:00 minutes, just after "In the Game." http://ondemand.satvonline.org/Cablecast/Public/Show.aspx?ChannelID=2&ShowID=33758

Event Description

For the EV curious: Come see the parade and check out EV's at this fun annual event! Happy Halloween!

EV owners: NOT your typical EV showcase!  This is not a "ride and drive" event and there will be limited time to interact with parade-goers. The intent is to have an EV segment as a counterpoint to the several segments of Jeeps that show up (and I don't mean Wrangler 4xe's).  Parades are usually noisy, exhaust-fume-filled affairs. Let's show Salem residents and visitors how quiet and clean EV's are!  While you are strongly encouraged to decorate your ride or make a float, you are welcome to simply roll with us. Got a frunk (and a 2nd person)? Make a "pop up" display to show during stopped moments. Or, do a "frunk or treat." Throwing candy is not allowed but you can make visitors go "huh?" as you hand it to them from your frunk.

"Personal Electric Conveyances" such as e-bikes, e-trikes, OneWheels, unicycles, scooters, and skateboards are also welcome! Feel free to register to "Participate" then select "Other Plug-In Vehicle" at the bottom, and describe in the comments. Note that you will be in a separate section of PEV's/PEC's and there is one area of the parade where you may want to walk/carry your ride over the cobblestones. Costumes/decorations of any sort are highly encouraged but not required.

Theme: Inspired by the exhibit of the same name at the Peabody Essex Museum, the theme this year is "Our Time on Earth."  Costumes and decorations should be made of recycled/repurposed materials, and/or fit that theme, if possible. Show visitors and residents how electrifying their ride is the cleaner, greener thing to do!

Please note that this is SALEM IN OCTOBER.  It's early October so hopefully won't be terrible, but still. Plan to arrive early and leave late. Locations of chargers around the City will be provided with parade details a few days prior. Parade lineup starts at 5:00, vehicles must be there by 5:30 at the latest, and the parade sallies forth at 6:30. The whole shindig is over at 8:15ish dispersing at Salem Common. We are only allowed 4-6 cars/trucks for this segment so registrations will be declined once we have those plus perhaps a couple of alternates.  We don't have a limit to the number of PEVs since they're much smaller.

Want to make a costume or decorate your vehicle, but aren't sure where to start? Whether marching, riding along, or driving, everyone is welcome to make a costume or trick out your vehicle at our FREE Costume Making event. Join us on Saturday, Sept. 12th from 9AM-12PM at El Espacio, 105 Congress St. Sponsored by Salem Alliance For the Environment (SAFE ) and hosted by Sunflower Creative Studios, materials will be provided to make sustainability-themed costumes or decorations for your vehicle. Please email skilb@salem.com to RSVP!
