Event Report
The Lawrence Electric Vehicle Showcase grew once again this year by leaps and bounds. We graduated from being on the periphery of South Park to the very center of the park on Massachusetts St., which was closed to traffic. We upped the number of EV cars by 50% from 31 in 2023 to 45 this year (60 had registered). We had about two dozen E-bicycles on display, plus many in attendance. And from last year’s presence of vendor booths by auto dealers and E-bicycle dealers, we expanded to include solar installers, the electric utility Evergy Inc., University of Kansas School of Engineering battery presentation, the Kansas City Metro Energy Center, and food trucks.
This year we passed a threshold of critical mass and saw a big jump in attendance. The numbers of attendees was between 800 to 1000, with people arriving before opening time, and never slowing down through the entire four hour show.
By official National Drive Electric Week statistics, the Lawrence Electric Vehicle Showcase ranked #12 in the country by number of registered attendees, and #8 in the country by number of registered EVs on display.
The variety of EVs included: Audi, Chevy Bolt, Fiat 500e, Fiskar Ocean, Ford Mustang, Ford F-150 pickup, Harley LiveWire, Honda Prologue, Hyundai Ioniq, Jeep Wrangler, Kia Niro, Kia EV6, Lucid Air, Mini Cooper, Nissan Leaf, Polaris ETV, Rivian R1S, Rivian R1T, Subaru Solterra, Tesla Cybertruck, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, Tesla Model Y, Toyota bZ4X, Volkswagen ID4, and Zero motorcycle. There also were two Lawrence electric buses there, as well as three EV conversions including a 1988 Yugo.
We partnered once again with the City of Lawrence, who was represented by their Sustainability Office, Parks & Recreation Department, Lawrence Transit, Municipal Services and Operations, and the MPO Agency.

Event Description
The Lawrence Electric Vehicle Showcase will be on Sunday, 6 October 2024, 11:00am-3:00pm. The show will be held on Massachusetts St. in South Park, which will be closed to traffic through the park.
Sustainability Action Network welcomes our two co-sponsors this year to our sixth annual show: the City of Lawrence Sustainability Office and the City of Lawrence Transit System. As in past years, we plan to have a wide variety of electric vehicles including: E-bicycles, E-cargo bicycles, electric cars and pickups, an electric bus, an electric street sweeper, and more. There will be displays by at least three local solar companies, and the University of Kansas Engineering School will sponsor a display of EV battery technology. The public will be able to talk with the EV owners, and learn the many advantages of driving an EV.

The U.S. transportation sector now produces more climate heating emissions than does the electric generation sector. Plug-in EVs are zero carbon when charged with renewable energy, and greater efficiency means lower carbon, even when charged by coal fired electricity. EVs get 100mpg equivalent or better, and the typical driving range of various makes is from 100 miles to 315 miles (Lucid Air and Teslas up to 400 miles).
