Event Report

This was the tenth year that our Kalamazoo group has put on an NDEW event.  This year was clearly the year we had the most variety of vehicles on display.  The LION-C all electric school bus from Three Rivers Community Schools (Michigan) was definitely a highlight, and included giving people a ride around the block.  Rich Mills' 1981 Jet Electra was also a special treat, along with the Sunseeker solar race car team from Western Michigan University.  We continue to be very appreciative of the owners of Midtown Fresh Market, who have allowed us to use this site for the past five years.

Event Description

Free Drive Electric Event in Kalamazoo

Public welcome!  This will be a great opportunity to see why folks are so excited about the latest Electric Vehicles.  Cars, trucks, bikes, buses,... EVs are the new wave in transportation.  See a variety of EVs up close and in action.  Drivers and other knowledgeable folks will be on site to answer any and all questions.  See the solar electric race car, along with members of the Sunseeker team from the WMU College of Engineering.  There will be a fully electric school bus on display from Three Rivers!  Representatives from Consumers Energy will also be there to share info on home charging incentive programs.  No schedule, just come any time between 10 and 3 and stay as long or as briefly as you like.

We'll be easy to find in the southeast part of the parking lot of a locally owned grocery store.  This store is only about 5 minutes south of downtown Kalamazoo and there are a variety of places to obtain food and beverages nearby.  See updates on this page and at /KalamazooEVA/ on Facebook.  This should be a great event, assuming the weather holds.  Big 'thank you' to our hosts at the Midtown Fresh Market, be sure to mention us when you go in and buy your snacks.

Special notice:  Heavy duty road construction continues in the area around the site.  I originally expected this to wrap up before the event, but as of 9/10/24 I have my doubts.  Patience may be required, but the parking lot will be accessible by car.  We may be restricted with regard to test drives.  Westnedge and Park streets will have reduced number of lanes open, Westnedge only open to southbound traffic.  Howard St. may be closed completely at Westnedge, but Crosstown Parkway is an alternative.

EV Drivers:
Please RSVP on this site if you think you can come, and be sure to check in at the main table when you arrive.  It is your choice whether to take people for rides or just do a static display.  For safety, we will try to segregate the display vehicles from the ones that may be going in and out of the parking lot, so let us know your preference when you arrive.  Thanks for spreading the word!
