Event Report

This was Richmond, VA's second annual NDEW celebration and we set stretch goals of doubling the number of electric vehicles at the main event and doubling attendance. While we didn't meet these ambitious goals, we still had significant growth thanks to very strong word of mouth via our social media channels and partnerships that we forged.

We had 36 electric vehicles at our EV Round-Up on 9/13 versus 22 vehicles in 2014. The largest contigent consisted of 8 LEAFs and 14 Teslas, including a Roadster from northern Virginia. We drew quite a few EV owners from that region and Hampton Roads, as well as a few owners from Maryland. And, a Raleigh, NC resident trailered his 2002 Toyota RAV-4 to Richmond for the second year in a row.

Total confirmed attendance at our EV Round-Up and two other NDEW events was 105 versus 68 in 2014. We drew only a small crowd to test drive four EVs and watch a film on 9/15, but got a much better turnout at a meet-up on zero emission transportation on 9/17.

A diverse group of electric vehicle owners (top) came together to share their experiences with the general public and each other for the main event at Richmond, Va.'s second annual NDEW celebration. In addition to this EV Round-Up on Sept. 13, there was a meet-up on zero-emission transportation on Sept. 17 co-sponsored by Richmond Green Drinks and Old Dominion Innovations (lower left), and test drives of four electric vehicles (upper right) and a free film screening (lower right) on Sept. 17 co-sponsored by the RVA Environmental Film Festival. Science Matters was the overall media sponsor.

OTHER EVENTS PLANNED FOR NATIONAL DRIVE ELECTRIC WEEK:

Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6:00 PM
A screening of Kick Gas will be paired with opportunities to test drive the latest electric vehicles available in metro Richmond, including the Nissan LEAF, Chevy Volt, and the BMW i3. The event will take place at the Parham Road campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Our promotional partner is the RVA Environmental Film Festival.

Thursday, Sept. 17 at 5:30 PM
Learn how electric vehicles can be combined with solar power to offer zero emission transportation at this meet-up. Charles Gerena, lead organizer of Drive Electric RVA, and Mark Nedervelt of solar installer Old Dominion Innovations will lead the discussion, which will be held at the Urban Farmhouse in Church Hill. Our promotional partner is Richmond Green Drinks.

The mission of Drive Electric RVA is to promote electric vehicles (EVs) as a fun, practical transportation alternative that also reduces energy consumption and air pollution. We will meet these goals by providing opportunities in the metro Richmond region for EV owners to learn from each other and for the general public to learn about EV technology. In addition, we will advocate for increasing the use of renewable energy to generate electricity and for reducing the environmental impact of EVs over their entire life cycle.
