Event Report

Drive Electric: EV Show & Shine and Test Drive event on Saturday, September 21 in Simms Millennium Park was a huge success! 700 people came by or participated, with 22 display electric vehicles in the Show and Shine, 30 test drives of electric cars (2 Bolts, a Leaf and an e-Golf). Many people took e-Bike test rides with Amped Rides and lots of children test drove the mini Tesla.

A great start to the day was an early brunch at the Wandering Moose Cafe for 17 EV owners in 11 cars. We shared a coffee and donuts before all parading slowly down (as in downhill) to the Show and Shine Event. A 6-mile, 500-foot descent meant we all gained energy and range on the way, and our estimate (actual readings from some cars) of the total energy recuperated was 5 kilowatt hours out of a total potential energy loss of about 13 kWhs (500 feet and 22 tons of EVs and passengers).

The biggest excitement around any EV was actually the Radio Flyer Model S, which kept over a dozen kids entertained for over 3 hours. We ran through approximately 180 watt hours of mini-EV battery power keeping them entertained.

Our Show and Shine consisted of:
  • Nissan Leaf
  • Tesla Model X
  • Tesla Model S (2)
  • Tesla Model 3 (6)
  • Hyundai Kona (3)
  • Mercedes e-Smart
  • Chevrolet Bolt (2)
  • Kia Soul
  • Jaguar I-Pace
  • Hyundai Ionic (arrived at the end)
  • Volkswagen e-Golf
  • Motorino e-Trike
  • e-Trike for sale

Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells and councillor Will Cole-Hamilton attended, along with press coverage from 97.3 The Eagle, The Record and CHEK News. The Mayor visited and talked about how he was to attend the annual convention of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, which featured several discussions on the future of urban transportation. He seemed visible impressed with the number and variety of EVs present.
