"Electrify Your Drive!"

A Free EV Car Show and Information Session

The Town of Hamden and the Hamden Energy Use and Climate Change Commission are hosting an educational event about electric vehicles for all interested people; the event will highlight the clean-air and cost-savings advantages of these fun-to-drive and high-tech vehicles. The 2019 event is the second annual National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) event to be held in Hamden and in the greater New Haven County area; it is part of the ninth annual National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) and is one of more than 300 local events nationwide. Last year’s event in Hamden was well attended with over 120 participants, including 21 EV drivers who brought their own vehicles to display.

At this year’s event, experienced EV owners will bring their own cars and will discuss why they like driving electric. The drivers will explain how they use their EVs on their daily commutes and longer distance drives, as well as how they charge their cars’ batteries. Participants will learn about the differences between electric vehicles and conventional gas-powered cars (including why electric vehicles are much less expensive to operate and maintain), the widespread locations and different types of charging stations, the wide range of EV models available now, and the benefits of electric vehicles for the environment and for public health. The event includes a Question-and-Answer session with a panel of EV owners/drivers and EV experts from local auto dealers.

Attendees will learn about special savings programs for Connecticut EV drivers, including state rebates as well as federal tax credits, for purchasing and leasing electric vehicles.

High performance sports cars, sedans, SUVs, and even pickup trucks are now or soon to be available in EV format, many with longer driving ranges. Plug-in vehicles by Nissan, Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Tesla, and other automakers will be displayed and some will be available for test ride-and-drives. Mayor Curt Leng will proclaim September 14–21 as “2019 Hamden Drive Electric Week.”
