Event Report
The 44th EV Rally and Show brought together a wide range of people who share an interest in electric vehicle technology. The ride-and-drive experience of hearing about new electric cars from their owners is very popular. There is also a group of enthusiasts who work on electric vehicle conversions and those who develop original designs. Both solar power and sustainable transportation are also key parts of the rally. Perhaps this comment best describes the event: “This was a blast, and I learned a lot. Let me know if there is another coming up or something like it.” Thanks to Mayor Barry Chang of Cupertino for reading a proclamation in support of Drive Electric Week, to the Monta Vista High School Robotics Team, to Nissan for hosting the “Nissan Lounge” with their vehicle-to-home power system. This event would not have been possible without the tireless planning, preparation, and encouragement of Jerry Pohorsky, Ron Freund, Susan Parks and Ben White. Report submitted by Kent Okasaki.
photo by: David Herron / longtailpipe.com Acme Muffineers member Thomas Hsieh provided a highlight of our event with his "Electric Muffin" motorized cupcake. It is shown here being driven by his son. Behind the cupcake is a motorized "surrey" wagon designed and built by Bob Schneeveis, who is wearing the cowboy hat. The feet of this machine move back and forth to pull the wagon forward. To the right are the solar panels for a trailer-mounted solar generator system built by Jerry Karmin.Directly in front of these solar panels is the nose of a white Ford Focus Electric from the City of Cupertino. The mayor, Barry Chang, presented a proclamation in support of Drive Electric Week. In the background is a gray Dodge Rampage pickup with its hood up. The truck has a custom EV drivetrain designed by Doug Brentlinger and installed by students of Dr. Fred Barez of San Jose State University. Finally, at the top of this photo are the tracking solar panels installed in the parking lot of De Anza College, Cupertino, CA. |
