Event Report

Staff from Cape Canaveral and Satellite Beach discussed each respective cities electrification efforts both in terms of fleet adoption and public charging station infrastructure. The Space Coast EV Drivers discussed what life is like owning or leasing an electric vehicle and provided some valuable resources for interested residents to explore more. The Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) conducted a virtual test drive with a camera fitted inside an all-electric Chevy Bolt that took viewers through how the vehicle worked, drove, and charged. And finally, Florida Power and Light (FPL) explained their EVolution Program which is set to see the company install at least 1,000 public charging ports at 100 different locations throughout Florida and along major interstates over the next several years.

Event Description

In keeping with the tenets of the Cape Canaveral Vision Statement and in an effort to set an example for coastal municipalities in Florida and across the nation, the City of Cape Canaveral is routinely taking action to be more resilient and sustainable. The City is committed to delivering policies that are effective, efficient, and forward-thinking. Electric vehicle adoption, promotion, and education is a part of this leadership effort.

The City will be hosting its second annual National Drive Electric Week event on Sunday, September 27, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. so that residents and visitors can learn about electric and hybrid vehicles, the infrastructure required to make them work, and to showcase those used within the City's own fleet. This online event is completely free to the public and there will even be a virtual test drive conducted. To host this event the City has coordinated with the Space Coast EV Drivers Club, a local EV enthusiasts club that currently contains over 100 vehicles and members who are dedicated to electric vehicle education, and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) via their Electrify the South campaign. SACE is a non-profit, nonpartisan energy watchdog group based in the Southeastern United States. Hope to see you there!
